Face Fit Testing
RPE must be able to protect the individual wearer. A major cause of leaks is a poor fit.
It is unlikely that one particular face mask will fit everyone, as we all come with different shapes and sizes of face. Face-fitting is the only avenue to ensure that the selected face mask offers protection to the wearer.
The best time to do face fitting is at the initial stage when the wearer is given the options of mask that would be most suitable for the face. Then the make, model, type and size should be recorded and the same type of mask used on all future occasions. If the type of face mask is changed then a new face fit test must be carried out.
The face fit test must be carried out by a competent person. There must also be evidence of being appropriately trained, qualified and experience.
A note on facial hair – stubble and beards – make it impossible to make a good seal between face and mask.
